HOW TO HIGH-FIVE YOURSELF WITH COMPASSIONATE HEALTHCARE
ELECTION. DISGUST AS A CATALYST FOR CHANGE.
Be the compassion in healthcare.
Recently, I was struck by a conversation I had with a patient who had been told she had "small amount of calcium on her heart walls that we should continue to monitor."
No explanation by her cardiologist as to what that meant.
HOW DISGUST CAN CATAPULT CREATIVITY (VIBHATSA RASA)
The news was on. We were quiet. The sadness was palpable. As Trump statements flashed across the screen there was a collective sigh.
One woman whispered, "What an election." I looked at her and smiled.
Moments later in the privacy of the mammography room, the radiology tech made me laugh as she pressed my tissue between two plates.
40 THINGS I KNOW FOR SURE AT FORTY
Our upper lip curls into a snarl. A deadly stare accompanied by clenched teeth. Disgust is loathing, anger, deep and cruel.
We may want to turn away, pull the blankets up tighter. Or maybe we continue to gaze, unable to turn away. Or maybe harsh words erupt from our bowels.
ST CROIX PHOTOJOURNAL: CONNECTING WITH THE ELEMENTS
40 things I know now that I didn't know then. . .
1. Red lipstick makes everything better.
2. Happiness takes practice.
3. Your efforts never go unnoticed.
4. Buy good bras.
5. There is no such thing as a bikini body.
6. "Hell yes" is ALMOST always the right answer.
FALL EQUINOX. FALL INTO BALANCE
In August we took a journey to colorful St Croix for our 1st Annual Elemental Flow Conference.
EARTH. WATER. FIRE. AIR.
All embodied on one beautiful Caribbean island.
FEELING THE FEAR (BHAYANAKA RASA)
Equi. Nox. Equal Night.
Twice a year, the Earth’s equator passes the sun’s path. The cycle of the earth around the sun is witnessed through the seasons; the rising of daylight in March and the quieting of that same light in September.
FIRE & REWIRE YOUR BRAIN TO DEAL WITH YOUR EMOTIONS
A quote presented itself to me recently: “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”
Ugh. Does it have to?
The end of my comfort zone brings me to sweaty palms, heart palpitations, and a general sense of unease. The unknown often signals an experience in our bodies that we call fear (bhanyanaka).
THE POWER OF WEARING YOUR INTENTION
When we fire a neuron for any reason - movement, thought or emotional circuitry - that neuron is myelinated.
The more it fires, the more myelin encases the neuron. The more myelin there is the faster the nerve can signal, which means a quicker response time. This is how we acquire “skills” such as riding a bike or master a yoga balancing posture. The same is true in working with our emotions; the stronger the myelin around the neural signals, the greater our awareness and response to the emotion.
SEPTEMBER NEW MOON + FIRE CEREMONY = SERIOUS TRANSFORMATION
SEEING your intention imprints it on your brain and keeps it at the forefront of your mind and close to your heart.
At Rasamaya we use the nine core emotions (rasas) as a base for manifesting our intentions. One of the ways we accomplish this is by wearing one or all of the rasas on our wrists. For centuries, people have adorned their wrists for remembrance, gratitude, honor. Wearing a rasa cuff is a little bit like tying a string to your finger so you don't forget what's important. Every time you look at your wrist you move a little closer to your most creative, full and inspiring life.
9 RIDICULOUSLY EASY STEPS ON HOW TO GET IT ALL DONE
A new moon is an opportunity to transform. Our retreat to St Croix will offer an opportunity to say, "Yes. This."
THE SLEEP OF THE BELOVED
People always ask me how I "get it all done." I don't have some miracle answer but over the last sixteen years of business I have become quite skilled at the Art of Efficiency. Here are a few of my favorite tools:
1. Keep a large ongoing to-do list with all your projects. This larger list is a reference that you can regularly refer back to and use to create your daily to-do lists.
GET OUT OF BED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT? IT'S NORMAL
I somehow came across this artist's work in my research for my post on Second Sleep. Artist Paul Maria Scheggenburger captured lovers sleeping using time lapse photography from midnight to 6am. The result is hauntingly beautiful. Scheggenburger asks us to consider the question, "How might 'your beloved sleep' look?" I loved this too much not to share. For more visit www.schneggenburger.at.
10 IDEAS TO KEEP YOUR FITNESS RESOLUTIONS
Do you get out of bed in the middle of the night? It turns out you might be more in tune with your natural rhythms then you think. Second sleep, also called segmented sleep, or bimodal sleep, is a biphasic sleep pattern that views middle of the night waking as a productive time to talk with bed fellows, pursue creative endeavors, or meditate. This window is approximately one hour, and research shows that the pituitary gland produces high levels of the hormone prolactin during this time.
It’s that time of year again… you know what I’m talking about, the dreaded guilt-forming New Year’s Resolution Showdown. Let me guess–fitness is on your list for 2016? If not, it should be. And you know what? This IS your year. You CAN do it. Stop the cycle of breaking promises and saying “to hell with it,” as you reach for that cookie. You ARE strong enough, motivated enough, and, gosh darn it, damn right, vixen worthy. To help, here is a list of my top ten ideas to get you out of the bed and into your yoga pants.
